The Narrandera LGA is comprised of the township of Narrandera, as well as the rural villages of Barellan, Binya, Grong Grong, Kamarah and Sandigo.

The Narrandera LGA has a population of approximately 5800 people and covers an area of 4118 square kilometres. “Narrandera” is derived from the Wiradjuri word “Narrungdera” meaning “place of lizard or goanna”. The famous explorer, Captain Charles Sturt camped on the edge of the Murrumbidgee River in Narrandera in December 1829. Many Irish settlers followed Sturt to the region, and the entire Narrandera frontage of the Murrumbidgee River had been claimed for farming purposed by the end of 1833.

History

Narrandera is home to the Narrungdera Clan and is located on Wiradjuri Country. The Wiradjuri people are the largest Aboriginal group in central New South Wales, by area and population.

The people of the Wiradjuri country are known as “people of three rivers” being the Macquarie River (Wambool), Lachlan River (Kalari) and the Murrumbidgee River (Murrumbidjeri) which border their lands. The Wiradjuri people are the first inhabitants of this area and have been living here for thousands of years.

Narrandera Shire Council states that “in 1860 the government surveyed the area and the village of Narrandera was proclaimed in 1863. However, it wasn't until 1885 that the Narrandera Borough was proclaimed with the first election on the 2nd June. The amalgamation of Yanco Shire and Narrandera Municipal Council in June 1960 led to the formation of Narrandera Shire Council."
