History

Bland Shire is rich in history, culture and art. You will find art in most of the towns and villages of the Bland Shire, created by local and international artists. From silo art in Weethalle, war murals in Ungarie and many sculptures, murals and art in West Wyalong, our history has come alive through art. Wander around Cooinda Reserve to interact with our history through the displays and take a walk to the Wetlands to admire the cultural display with life size animal sculptures painted by local aboriginal artist. Collect your Bland Art Trail booklet from the West Wyalong Visitor Information Centre.

The original occupants of the area were the Wiradjuri people. A glass museum containing cultural items and life size sculptures painted by local Aboriginal Artist. The West Wyalong Local Aboriginal Land Council also have a beautifully painted ‘meeting room’ open to the public.

There were many pastoral properties around Bland Shire as early as 1830. The district grew slowly for the next 60 years then Joseph Neeld discovered gold in September 1893. By January, 1894 there were 500 miners in the area and by May of that year 12 000 men were digging on the goldfield.
