For tens of thousands of years, Aboriginal people have called this region home, with large Aboriginal communities living on the Hay plains and around the Lachlan, Macquarie, Murrumbidgee and Murray rivers.

The Riverina and Murray regions sit across Wiradjuri, Walgalu, Ngarigo, Yorta Yorta, Barapa Barapa, Wemba Wemba, Wadi Wadi, Nari Nari, Dadi Dadi, Kureinji, Muthi Muthi, Barindji, Barkindji and Danggali country.
